I cannot tell

I cannot tell why he whom angels worshipShould set his love upon the sons of menOr why as shepherd he should seek the wanderersTo bring them back they know not how or whenBut this I know that he was born of MaryWhen Bethlehem’s manger was his only homeAnd that he lived at Nazareth and labouredAnd so the saviour saviour of the world is comeI cannot tell how silently he sufferedAs with his peace he traced this place of tearsOr how his heart upon the cross was brokenThe crown of pain to three and thirty yearsBut this I know he heals the broken heartedAnd stays our sin and calms our lurking fearAnd lifts the burden from the heavy-ladenFor yet the Saviour Saviour of the world is hereI cannot tell how he will win the nationsHow he will claim his earthly heritageHow satisfy the needs and aspirationsOf east and west of sinners and of sageBut this I know all flesh shall see his gloryAnd he will reap the harvest he has sownAnd some glad day his sun shall shine in splendourWhen he the saviour saviour of the world is knownI cannot tell how the lands shall worshipWhen at his bidding every storm is stilledOr who can say how great the jubilationWhen all the hearts of men with love are filledBut this I know the skies will thrill with raptureAnd myriad myriad human voices singAnd earth to heaven and heaven to earth will answerAt last the saviour saviour of the world is King.William Young Fullerton (1857-1932)Írskt þjóðlag
